Seniors who feel a sense of purpose or engage in hobbies of genuine interest are less likely to succumb to the negative effects of social isolation. Engaging in the community through recreational activities allows seniors to lead a healthy and active lifestyle and also to maintain a healthy social life which can be highly beneficial for mental health and well-being.

Dovercourt Recreation Centre has some ideal fitness options for seniors aged 55 and over.


Strength and Fitness Classes:

Women on Weights – Strength training with weights, along with a variety of activities and experience, is proven to improve bone density and metabolism, as well as elevate body, mind and overall well-being.  This is a class suitable for women of all ages and fitness levels Available Wednesdays.

Men on Weights – This strength training program with weights is a class for men of all ages and fitness levels.  Available Thursdays and Saturdays.


Rehabilitation Classes:

Rehab Walking – This instructional class is designed for individuals who want to walk in a safe, supervised small group.  Ideal for those recovering from surgery, injury or medical conditions such as stroke, arthritis, and knee/hip replacements, the Rehab Walking program is an excellent step in the right direction.  Available Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Osteofit – Perform muscular strength and endurance exercises and experience an increase in functional ability under the guidance of a skilled instructor.  Osteofit was created specifically for individuals who have bone density issues such as osteoporosis or osteopenia.  Available Tuesdays and Thursdays.

 

Gold Club Program 

This program allows individuals to build a personal program each season that includes a variety of focus classes including strength training, flexibility, posture and mobility training.

Balance, Core and Flexibility – This class addresses the top three issues for active aging: core strength, balance and flexibility.  Exercises are done in a slow and controlled manner, with options given to suit your body’s abilities.

Gold Aquafit – Aquafit is great for older adults with joint issues such as arthritis or hip and knee replacements.  Why not relax and socialize in the hot tub and sauna after your class?

Simply Stretch – Basic and gentle stretching is a necessary component of fitness in order to maintain or gain muscular flexibility and complete range of motion through the joints.  A great variety of active and static stretches performed at a personal level of comfort will be practices, releasing muscle tension and enhancing circulation. Come relax and enjoy, or just Simply Stretch.
